5 DIY techniques to make your own white noise
Research says that disruptive sleep may be as harmful to our bodies as not getting any sleep at all. If the incessant snoring of your partner wakes you every now and then as it rises to a deafening crescendo, then you may want to try white noise.
White noise is a combination of noise in all the frequencies that is audible to the human ear. Consider it like a huge steady mix of sounds that’s on a continuous loop and masks out the other ambient sounds. It is considered to be one of the most beneficial ways to counter disruptive sleep.
One way to get started with white noise is to buy a sound machine that will create the noise for you. The upside is that you can choose from an array of different sounds that include a forest, an ocean, rainfall or a fireplace. The downside is that a good quality machine will at least cost $100.
The other way is to try to create it yourself with some DIY hacks to see if it works for you. Kind of like dipping your toes in the water. Despite sounding overly technical, it is as simple as buying a table fan and running it all night.
Here are a few simple DIY techniques to make your own white noise at home.
An air purifier can be an excellent option to make your own white noise and the added benefit is that it cleans the air that you breathe in. Air purifiers have a soft whirring sound that is a tad different than the one created by a table fan. However, you should be aware of how loud it can be. Air purifiers are usually louder than other types of machines used for white noise. So, if you have a really loud snorer or a really noisy neighbor, this is the one you should try first.
Air conditioners can produce a very subtle rumbling sound that can be a good choice if you are not looking for loud white noise. The caveat is that you will have to run it all night and you will be running up a very high energy bill in no time.
If you have a TV in your bedroom, then TV static is a cheap and easy way to get started with white noise. Ensure that the volume is lowered to a comfortable level and just let it buzz all night. Simple. You can also choose 10-12 hour long static videos on YouTube and play it your laptop.
